Obituary of Vinita Sturgeon
A woman of great warmth and charm, Vinita Sturgeon was also an incredible fighter. As her hero Mahatma Gandhi said, "Strength does
not come from physical capacity. It comes from indomitable will."
Vinita passed away Nov. 8, 2017 at her home in Boulder following a long battle with cancer. She was 86.
She was born Dec. 20, 1930 on a farm near Carnegie, Okla. At age 11, she was adopted by George Bradshaw, a professor at the
University of Kansas, and his wife Mary.
Vinita graduated from Lawrence High School and went on to earn a BS in education from KU in January 1953. On Feb. 21, 1953, she married her husband of 64 years, H. Lee Sturgeon. The couple moved to Boulder from Rocky Ford in 1968. They had two children, Lynn and Seana.
Vinita was a force of nature in Boulder. She was a Realtor with Mock Realty, served as director of the Boulder Board of Realtors and
was president of the Boulder Women's Council of Realtors.
She held many offices in P.E.O. and helped start the Boulder chapter of the Palmer Drug Abuse Program. She was a founding member of the Boulder Flatirons Rotary and served on the Boulder Community Hospital auxiliary. Vinita was Chairman of the Boulder County chapter of the American Cancer Society and counseled women undergoing or facing cancer treatment. She also won a landmark federal legal anti-discrimination case against First National Bank, establishing
that women have the right to credit on the same terms as men.
She loved tennis and golf, and having been president of the University Women's Club and the Buffalo Belles, followed CU sports avidly, cheering for KU, however, when they played CU.
Vinita is survived by her husband Lee, of Boulder; a son, Lynn B. Sturgeon, of Golden; two sisters, Yvonne Dees of Hugo, Okla. and Colleen Johnson of State College, Pa.; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her birth parents, Thomas and Velda Wesnidge; her adoptive parents; her daughter, Seana; and her brother, Thomas Wesnidge.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 at Boulder Country Club, 7350 Country Club Road, Boulder, CO 80301.
