Mary Agnes McCarthy, 100, died Sunday, April 14, 2013 in her home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 22, 2013, at Sacred Heart of Jesus, 2312 14th Street in Boulder.
Mary was born August 30, 1912, in Buffalo, NY to Florence and Agnes (Donovan) McCarthy. She was a teacher for 40 years, having a Master's in Education and working with physically handicapped students, some of whom were victims of polio.
Mary was an outstanding educator from 1933-73, recognized and commended by many organizations, including Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of Women Educators. She also received the National Science Foundation Award in Mathematics. After retirement, Mary continued to serve her professional community of retired teachers and volunteered with other seniors' organizations.
A gifted artist, Mary was a long-standing member exhibitor of the Buffalo Society of Artists. She was also an accomplished pianist, willing to entertain friends and family even into her hundredth year.
Prior to moving to Boulder, she was a devoted member of Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna, NY, active in the Catholic Daughters of America, and other parish committees. Upon relocating to Boulder in 1999, Mary joined the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and enthusiastically embraced her new hometown.
Mary was predeceased by her Life's Companion Catherine A. Baldwin.
Mary leaves many who loved her including her nephew, Thomas Daly (Margaret Fitzgibbons) of Boulder; niece Maureen Curtin (Daniel) of Rancho Santa Fe, CA; niece Kathy Ealy (John) of Painted Post, NY; Paul Adams (Donna) of Grand Island, NY as well as many grand-nieces and grand-nephews and their families.
