Martha “Lou” Speier of Nathrop, CO, formerly of Boulder, died Thursday, April 9, 2015. She was 81.
A Committal Service will be held at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, 3698 S. Sheridan Blvd. Denver on Wed., April 22nd, at 11:30 A.M. at staging area B. A celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 P.M. in Boulder at the American Legion, 4760 28th Street. A Mass will be said Tues. April 28th, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 320 E. 5th St, in Salida, CO.
Lou was born February 14, 1934 to Ennis and Myrtle (Montgomery) Ballew in Springfield, KY. She attended Athens High School in Athens, MI where she graduated in 1952. She graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in Education in 1956.
Lou taught high school and coached girls’ sports in Utica, MI. In 1959, she met and married Jim Speier. She moved to CO, and taught PE in Adams County. In 1960, she started a family and left teaching to raise four children. In 1976, she returned to teaching and was the Community School Director in Lyons. She felt teaching was the greatest job in the world.
She is survived by: her husband Jim of 56 years, two daughters Terri, Tracy, two sons Tim (Molly), Trent (Lisa), and two grandsons, Kirk and Jamie.
