Born to Rev A. Balfour Patterson, Jr and Virginia Wheeler Patterson, Lou, the middle son of three brothers, grew up in a home filled with light, love, and laughter on Mapleton Hill in Boulder. He had a childhood full of sports, family worship at St. Aidan’s Church, cheering for the Buffs, roaming far and wide in old Boulder, and meals around the Patterson’s famous oak dining room table. As an undergrad at CU, he worked as a student trainer for the Buffs, cementing his love of the program and giving him a wealth of stories to tell. Shortly after graduating, he demonstrated his commitment to serving others by moving to Houston to live with and care for a widowed, ailing uncle. Returning to Boulder after a couple of years, he married his first wife, followed shortly by the birth of two daughters, Kate and Emily. He formed Patterson Publishing to be his own boss, allowing him to devote many years to raising his girls. In the process of being a champion Dad, he began volunteering at the girls’ schools. Thus, began decades of service in school support and PTO participation, becoming a ferocious advocate for the students and teachers in BVSD.
Lou later met and married Donna Drose and settled into many wonderful years together, welcoming two more daughters, Mackenzie and Caroline. Donna’s family of twin sister Julia, brother Jack, brother Greg, and wife Lora welcomed Lou as part of their family. After working to manage the family store, The Printed Page on the Pearl Street Mall, he eventually returned to the publishing business, working for The Colorado Daily and Boulder Daily Camera. In later years, he continued serving others, becoming a caretaker to his beloved mother, while also returning to St. Aidan’s Church for over a decade as Facilities Manager.
Through his later years as “Deuce,” grandfather to Avery Huisken, Bennett Huisken, Brynn Schulte, and newcomer Sloane Harvey, he cherished his time with all of them, never failing to show them love and support…and tell a few stories. He is survived by his wife Donna, daughters Kate Huisken (Brice), Emily Schulte (Chris), Mackenzie Patterson, and Caroline Harvey (Sebastian), his grandchildren, brothers Ralph (Lynn) and Bal (Elisabeth), nieces Esme and Genny Patterson, nephews Reggie and Ricky Patterson and Brady and Taylor Drose. Services will be held on Saturday, August 31st at 10:00 AM AT St. Aidan's Episcopal Church 2425 Colorado Ave., Boulder, CO 80302. A reception will follow the service at the church.
