Joseph Duncan Roberts, 92, of Boulder, died on July 15, 2018. He was at home with hospice care, surrounded by family and friends.
Duncan, as he liked to be called, had a life well-lived. Born in Mount Kisco, NY, he was one of three children. In his formative years, he attended Lawrenceville School and then Williams College. During his freshman year at Williams, he was called to active duty in WWII, where he served in France and Germany at the Battle of the Bulge. Upon return to the USA, he graduated and headed into the working world as a print advertising salesman. While living and working in Greenwich Village, he met Helen Pratt Allen, whom he convinced to marry him (lucky guy!). They moved to Ardsley, NY when daughter Sarah was born. A job change warranted a move to the Philadelphia area, where son John joined the family.
A job opportunity with US News & World Report then took them to North Tarrytown, NY. Duncan commuted to New York City for 16 years. His extra-curricular activities included being a member of the Harwood Striders running club, playing in a steel drum band and volunteering with several civic/community organizations.
Upon semi-retirement in 1984, Helen and Duncan moved to Boulder, CO. Duncan worked another five years for the Denver Post before ending that chapter of his life. In full retirement he had time for reading, skiing with family, golfing with many friends, gardening with Helen and volunteering for the Copper Mountain Metro District.
After Helen’s death in 2006, Duncan found Joan Walseth (lucky guy again!) with whom he enjoyed CU Buffs events, playing bridge, dining and traveling.
Of the many wonderful comments about Duncan from family and friends, one succinctly sums up the man: “Duncan was a caring, giving man of the highest integrity. He had a keen sense of humor that all associated with him could enjoy.” We miss him terribly and treasure our many memories with him. He was the best dad and friend we could have wished for.
Duncan is survived by Sarah Roberts Wheatley, daughter; John Roberts, son; Carolyn Roberts, granddaughter; William Roberts, grandson.
Private services were held by the family.
