John Stanley Kearney passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on October 28, 2015 in Louisville, CO. He was born on April 4, 1930 in Manila, Philippines to Adrian Albert “Dusty” Kearney and Margaret Newhouse Kearney. He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane Washington and the University of Colorado School of Business where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
John proudly served his country in the Korean War from 1951-1953 in the U.S. Army Medical Corps 160th Infantry Regiment where he earned a Combat Medical Badge.
John was National Sales Manager with Western Cutlery for 18 years. In 1988 he established Kearney Realty and for 17 years managed the Boulder Metro Brokers office, working with his wife Jo and his son, Neil and other agents.
John’s favorite word was “Dad”. As a very present father he devoted his time to attending the games, performances and activities of his five kids and 11 grandchildren. Playful, he was fortunate when his kids were young to have had five built-in participants for pick up games of tennis, basketball, catch and especially golf, of which he was a devoted student and collector of putters.
John played freshman basketball for the University of Colorado under Sox Walseth in 1948. He continued to be a basketball supporter and for over 40 years he and Jo have had season tickets for the Men’s Basketball team. In the early years their five kids were faithfully in tow at the games as future fans.
John was a thoughtful collector of antique straight edge razors, Western knives and oriental rugs. He was an avid reader and enjoyed whistling. John was a serious student of Christian Science and served the Boulder Christian Science Church in many capacities over the years.
John was a consistent, steady, kind, present, honest and devoted father, husband and a gentleman. John had a soft heart and a ready kind word. He entertained his family and friends with an infectious sense of humor and was a good listener. His legacy will live on in his family.
John is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, JoAnn Jenkins Kearney, his five children, Melinda Kearney, Allyson Evans, (Robert), Neil Kearney (Kristy), Stephanie Hill (Brandan), Lesley Rockwood (Wade), his 11 grandchildren and his sister, Margaret “Peggy” Kearney. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Adrian Albert Kearney Jr..
