Joan Taylor McCarthy, 90, died December 15th, 2016 in her daughter's home in Morrison, Colorado, after returning from Staunton, VA, where she had lived for 15 years. She was born in August on Friday the 13th,1926 in Morristown, New Jersey. Her high school years were spent in Richmond, Indiana and upon graduating she entered the Army Cadet Nurse Corps training program at Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond, receiving her diploma in 1948. During her last year of training, on June 10th, 1947, she married 1st Lieutenant John J. McCarthy. The Army assigned her to the Dayton, Ohio Veterans Hospital, where Joan treated soldiers wounded in the Pacific during WWII. Her nursing career spanned forty five years, during which time she and her husband raised seven children and moved
sixteen times!
She was an accomplished seamstress and quilt maker, gifting each of her children with a special quilt before she died. She loved people, gardening and most of all her beloved dogs.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Frank R. Taylor. Survivors include four sons, John (Libby) T. McCarthy (NC), Joseph P. McCarthy (TX), Dennis M. McCarthy (CO), and Daniel (Kristy) McCarthy (CO), and three daughters, Mary Ellen (Larry) Barrett (VA), Karen (Gary) M. Joiner (CO), Judith (Rudy) Herrera, (CO), one sister, Irma (James) McKenna, (NJ), sixteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Terry Kissel at St. Michael the Arch Angel Catholic Church, 19099 East Floyd Ave., Aurora, CO 80013 on Friday, January 20th at 10:30AM. A reception will follow at the church.
