Reverend Jean (Bryant) Scott
December 2, 1931 - June 7, 2014
Jean B. Scott, 82, of Boulder, Colorado died peacefully on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at TRU Hospice Care Center in Louisville only a few weeks after being diagnosed with cancer.
Jean was born on December 2, 1931 in Osceola, Nebraska to Gail Kathryn (Hamilton) Bryant and J. Carl Bryant. She attended high school in Hastings, Nebraska and earned a BA degree from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. After graduation, Jean married, and later divorced, Jack Scott. When only the youngest of her five children was still in high school, Jean followed in the footsteps of her beloved minister grandfather, and attended Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri where she earned a Master of Divinity degree.
From 1981 to 1992, Jean was a United Methodist Minister in Saint Louis, Missouri. In 1992, Jean, and longtime friend Leslie Edwards, moved from Saint Louis to the Boulder, Colorado area. Jean worked as a Chaplain and Grief Counselor for HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield County (now TRU) from 1993 to 2006. From 2002 to 2013, Jean was the Associate Pastor at Community United Christ of Christ in Boulder, Colorado.
Jean was one of those rare individuals whom everyone liked. Her generous spirit and caring career inspired one friend and co-worker to describe her as a "Community Treasure." Jean's inquiring mind and compassionate heart made her a great conversationalist and even greater friend and family member. Woven among Jean's many sterling qualities was a perfect pinch of mischievous, lighthearted humor. That, combined with her gregarious nature and ready laugh, made her a lot of fun to be around. Her loving presence and exceptional work are greatly appreciated and will be sorely missed.
Jean is survived by her daughter Susan Sebetka (Ray) of Cortez, CO; sons Gary Scott (Carol) and James Scott (Erin) of Marshalltown, IA; and David Scott (Mary) of Bloomsdale, MO; brother Bill Bryant (Beth) of Covington, GA; granddaughters Shannon Laughlin (Ricky Harmon) of Waterloo, IA; Cathy Montgomery (Dan) of Clinton, IA; grandsons Nathan Laughlin (Brianne) of Des Moines, IA; Matt Free of Cedar Falls, IA; cousins Beth Tucker of Eugene, OR; Ruth Cameron of Seattle, WA; and dog, Charlie, now of Marshalltown, IA. Jean was preceded in death by daughter Sharon Free, 2010, and granddaughter Jenny Free, 2002.
Thank you to all of you for the incredible amount of loving care and concern you've shown Jean these last weeks. She was very touched and tremendously appreciative!
