Janice was born on March 24, 1955 in Chattanooga, TN to John Wesley and Frances Lee (Herron) Kline. She graduated from Seaholm High School in Birmingham, MI, where she participated in synchronized swimming and was an honor student. In 1973, she moved to Glenwood Springs, CO with her first husband, Steve Saffell. There, she worked as a switchboard operator at the Hotel Colorado while studying at Colorado Mountain College. They moved to Boulder, CO, in 1975 where Janice worked at Storage Tek during its start-up years. Janice then began working at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), where she made her career for 25 years. Janice received her Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from Regis University in Denver, CO, in 1995, graduating magna cum laude, while raising her two children and working full-time. She married Rick Kauvar on June 10, 2000 in Boulder, CO. She has been a resident of Boulder for 45 years.
Family, friends and colleagues remember Janice as a woman of tremendous grace and character, dedicated to her family and her work. She is described by those close to her as selfless, modest, and kind, someone who was unflinchingly professional yet caring with colleagues. She was devoted to her family, was an inspiration to her son, and was a best friend to her daughter. She lived simply, worked hard, and loved unconditionally. Janice found inspiration in Native American spiritual teachings, enjoyed swimming, gardening, and the outdoors, and cherished her four-legged family members. She will be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched.
Janice is survived by her husband Rick of Boulder, CO; parents John and Frances Kline of Evergreen, CO; son Blake Saffell of Boulder, CO; daughter Bree Roche of Portland, OR; brother Wes Kline of Elk Rapids, MI; and sister Karen Buckland of Evergreen, CO.
