Janet Tyler Grove Tietz, 77, of Houston, Texas, passed away August 1, 2014 at TRU Community Care in Boulder, Colorado. She was born June 28, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to William Arthur Grove and Elsie Styles Barnett.
Janet met Frederic August Tietz in Boulder the summer of 1957. Their first date resulted from Janet’s attending summer school at the University of Colorado where her uncle, Otis Green, a renowned Spanish literature authority, was teaching for the summer. After she graduated from Wells College in Aurora, New York, Janet married Fred in Woods Hole, Massachusetts on August 15, 1959. Over the course of their 55-year marriage, the couple traveled extensively, managing to visit all seven continents and over 70 different counties. Fred and Janet also spent 26 summers in the Chautauqua Community of Boulder.
An active member of her community, Janet was affiliated with numerous organizations including PEO, American Women’s Association, Lakeside Country Club Women’s Association, Women’s Home Assistance League of Houston and Magic Circle Republican Women’s Club. Janet was also an avid bridge player and loved to travel.
Janet is preceded in death by her brother, Richard Barnett Grove, Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. She is survived by her husband, Frederic; her three children: Eric (Elaine) Tietz, of Houston, Texas; Andrew (Susan) Tietz, Houston, Texas; Susan (Michael) Tietz Pearce, Charleston, South Carolina; brother William Arthur Grove (Mary Ann), McLean, Virginia; and eight grandchildren.
A celebration of Janet’s life will be held at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, 2425 Colorado Avenue, Boulder, on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 3:00pm with a reception at the church to follow.
