Catherine Carol Bloomer Johnson
June 4, 1935- June 24, 2014
Catherine (Carol) Johnson, of Boulder, passed away from heart failure June 24, 2014 at Boulder Community Hospital while surrounded by family and friends. She was 79.
Born in Bradford, Pennsylvania, to Julia and Robert Bloomer, Carol grew up in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. She attended Mt. Pleasant schools where she was voted homecoming queen her senior year of high school and was honored for her excellence in school.
Carol initially attended Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and later transferred to Central Michigan where she graduated with a degree in education. In her senior year she was awarded "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges". Carol participated in many campus activities.
Carol competed in the 1956 Miss Michigan pageant, where she won the title of "Miss Photogenic".
Carol had her first teaching assignment in Pamona, California teaching sixth grade. She met her husband, Bruce, in Long Beach where he was stationed with the United States Navy. Carol continued her teaching career in Sioux City, Iowa, and in Denver and Boulder.
Carol enjoyed many social activities. She was a member of two book clubs which was evidence of her lifelong love of literature. She was an avid gardener and a member of Spade and Trowel Garden Club. Carol also enjoyed Bridge, Mahjong, and board games. Going to the theater and musical performances were some of her favorite pastimes. Carol loved the turquoise waters of the Caribbean and toured many of its islands. Carol spent many of her teaching years working with students that spoke English as a second language and her family served as a host family for students studying from abroad. These relationships became lifelong friendships. Carol had a special love of animals. Over the years, their yard accommodated dogs, cats, ducks, turkeys, and fish.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents. She leaves her husband of 54 years, Bruce, and their children: Cydney Johnson of Fort Collins; Shayne Johnson and her husband Steve Buller of Idaho Springs, and Toby Johnson of Longmont. Additional family members include her sister Dottie and several pets: Charlie, Ely, Chloe, and Atticus. Carol also leaves behind her lifelong friend, Nancy Hewett Magnuson of Claremont. They were friends since early childhood and continued their adventures when they moved to California to become teachers.
