Longtime Boulderite Bruce Johnson passed away on April 11th, 2018 at Morningstar Senior Living in Boulder. He was 84.
Born in Sioux City, IA on February 28th, 1934 to parents Ernest A. Johnson and Edna (née Farrington) Johnson, Bruce graduated from Central High School (Sioux City) in 1952. After coming to Boulder to earn a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Colorado, Bruce served in the United States Navy as an officer on the U.S.S. Herbert J. Thomas (destroyer class) in the Pacific. He married Catherine Carol Bloomer on August 15th, 1959, and the couple settled in Boulder in 1964. Bruce earned his J.D. from Denver University and began his lifelong career as an attorney in Boulder County. He and Catherine raised two daughters, Cydney and Shayne, and a son, Tobin, who is severely disabled. Bruce remained incredibly devoted to finding solutions for the care of Tobin and others in the same situation. In this vein, Bruce volunteered a significant amount of time with A.C.L. (Administration for Community Living), specifically on "Imagine", a group-home project, and received numerous awards for his efforts. He was also a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, active in the Optimist Club, loved the Broncos, and was a star track athlete at C.U. Catherine and Bruce traveled to México many times; they especially enjoyed exploring the beaches and historic sites in and around Playa del Carmen.
Bruce is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine, who died on June 24th, 2014, as well as his best furry friend, Charlie, who followed shortly after his master. Bruce is survived by his sister, Shirley Hess (Irvine, CA), his son, Tobin Johnson (Longmont, CO), and his daughters, Cydney Johnson (Fort Collins, CO) and Shayne Johnson (Idaho Springs) and his son-in-law, Steve Buller (Idaho Springs, CO).
A memorial service will take place on Thursday, June 7th at 1:30 PM at Columbine Spiritual Center, 8900 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 80303. Military Honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy.
The Johnson family thanks you for all your kind thoughts and sentiments.
