Anne Hylan Riley passed away from a post-stroke infection at Boulder Community Hospital on November 21st, 2016 with family members at her side. She was 91. Born in Boulder, CO on August 22nd, 1925 to parents Malcom C. Hylan and Mary Alice H. Hylan, Anne graduated from Boulder High School in 1943. She then studied German at the University of Colorado, earning a Bachelor's Degree. She belonged to Pi Beta Phi sorority while in college and was active as an alum. Post-graduation, Anne traveled to Vermont, where she attended a six-week intensive program in German at Middlebury College. On September 1st, 1948, she married Paul E. Riley in Boulder and shortly thereafter they moved to Ardmore, OK, for his job. Anne relished the role of homemaker, raising five children. The Riley family returned to Boulder in 1971, and has been based here ever since. Anne loved tennis, she was very involved in Boulder's tennis community until recent decades. Another great passion of hers was her membership in The Fortnightly Club of Boulder, a women's organization devoted to promoting literary and scientific culture. Anne was a member of the Colorado State Chapter of P.E.O which is a philanthropic educational organization for women built upon service and philanthropy. She and Paul also enjoyed their bridge group. During the 1980s and '90s, Anne and Paul traveled extensively, exploring cultures and embracing adventures in China, Europe, and Africa. Anne volunteered in various roles at First Congregational Church in Boulder and her ties extend back to childhood when her mother was the church's pianist and her father oversaw the Sunday school. Survivors include Anne's husband, Paul, of Boulder, CO; Michael H. Riley (wife, Cindy) of Newton, MA; Kit A. Cassingham (husband, Randy) of Ridgway, CO; Christopher H.S. Riley (wife, Beth) of Boulder, CO; Bruce B. Riley (wife, Willi) of College Station, TX; Julie E. Wallace (husband, David) of Berthoud, CO. Anne is also survived by eleven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 18th, 2:00PM at First Congregational Church (located at the corner of Broadway and Pine).
