Al was born in Talmadge, Nebraska, on March 4, 1928. He attended schools in Omaha. Nebraska and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and Business Administration from the University of Omaha. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1955. Al retired from the International Business Machines Company in 1990 after thirty-two years of service.
Al married Eileen Turner in 1952. They have four children David Zach, John Zach, Jodie Dionysius and Kathy Kiser. Al has two grandchildren, Jennifer Mullins and Eric Zach, and five great-grandchildren. Al and Eileen moved to Colorado in 1965 and they have lived in Boulder, Colorado since 1966. His beloved wife, Eileen, has preceded him in death in 2003.
Al was a Past Exalted Ruler of the Boulder Elks Lodge #566 in 1986-1987. He was a member of the Boulder Central Optimist Club and the East Boulder Optimist Club. Al was also a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Boulder, Colorado.
He was on the Board of Directors for the Boulder Seniors Foundation, which assists low income and needy seniors. He regularly volunteered at Community Food Share to help with canning, fund raisers and food drives. Al helped raise funds for the Salvation Army by ringing bells at Christmas time each December and was an annual volunteer for the Channel 9 Health Fair for many years.
His hobbies included volunteerism, computer service, camping, swimming and yard work.
Private family Graveside Services Wed. Jan. 19th at Green Mountain Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 AM at the Westview Church 6710 Arapahoe Rd. in Boulder. A reception will follow the service at the church.
